Asimina Mataftsi

Dr. Asimina Mataftsi is a Professor of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She trained in Ophthalmology in Switzerland and in the U.K. and completed an MSc in Strabismus in Nantes, France and her PhD in oculogenetics in Lausanne, Switzerland. She undertook fellowships at St Helier’s University Hospital and at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Since 2006 she is based at a busy tertiary hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece, where she runs a general paediatric ophthalmology clinic, operates on cataracts and strabismus, and takes care of preterm infants. Along with her busy clinical and surgical activity, Dr. Mataftsi teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervises PhD students and trains residents. She has written 3 chapters in books, published >100 papers in international journals with >1000 references, and taken part in 5 international multicentre clinical trials. She was an invited speaker in multiple greek and international congresses and seminars. She has been a reviewer in 10 international medical journals, reviewer of applications for national scholarships and grants, and she’s an active member of the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and of the European Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology.
